Google’s long-teased Gemini for Home voice assistant is finally rolling out in early access across the US. The move follows a testing phase that began in October, letting a handful of users shape what feels like the biggest Google Home update since Assistant first showed up.
Think of Gemini as the more capable, more chatty evolution of your existing voice assistant. Once you sign up, your speaker or display upgrades from Google Assistant to Gemini, without having to pay extra.
You’ll notice better answers, smoother control of our smart devices, and finally, the ability to have a conversation without having to keep yelling “Hey Google” every few seconds.
For the especially curious, there’s a Google Home Premium subscription that unlocks Gemini Live. That means you can have more natural conversations, ask follow-up questions, or just brainstorm dinner ideas on the fly.
The best part? Gemini works with every Google speaker or display made since 2016, which includes Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max, Nest Audio, and even that old first-gen Google Home Mini you forgot about. They are all getting smarter and you’ll definitely notice the difference.
You’ll be able to ask Google what meetings you’ve got tomorrow, what you can make out of the ingredients in your fridge, and ask it to turn off every light in the house bar the ones in the kitchen. It’s a brilliant update and one that’ll change how we interact with our smart home assistants.
If you’re in the US, you can sign up for early access now in the Google Home app. The rest of us will have to wait until 2026.
